On Friday we both got to spend the day together, which is a rare occurrence during the week. My husband said lets get you some coffee first( I cant help myself, coffee before talkie) and then I have a surprise for you. The surprise was a trip to a lumbar warehouse called Exotic Lumbers. Now you may be thinking to yourself, how is that a surprise for you? well to be honest, I love wood and the way it smells..weird I know but its true. There is something about it that just draws me in. Carpenters and woodworkers have always fascinated me, I guess its why I am so excited for my husband to get his wood shop set up.
As the name of this place suggests they have everything from standard woods( oak, cherry etc) to exotic ones. My new favorite wood is the Holly live edge seen in the photo above. I mean I cant with how beautiful it is . I will be the first to tell you that if a wood has a live edge I am there. These pieces of holly would make beautiful console tables or couch tables. The lady who was working the counter not only had wonderful knowledge of the different types of wood but she was also able to show us the true coloring of some of the pieces. So in a wood shop the pieces get dusty from all of the woods being cut and so forth, in order to see the true colors of woods( the purpleheart wood is a beautiful shade of purple) they need to be wet. She brought out a water bottle and sprayed some of this Holly wood off so we could see how vibrant it was.
The above wood is called Pink Ivory and when I tell you the pink coloring of it is stunning, it is. Unfortunately my camera didn’t capture it entirely but wow is it pink.
I learned something new while talking to the lady at the store, like fabrics and textiles woods can also change colors over time. That may seem obvious to some people but as someone who is rather new to the “wood world” I had no idea that would also changed over time, especially when exposed to the sun. Overall it was a wonderful experience and we even left with some wood( not the Holly sadly). I am looking forward to spending more time here and getting to know the lovely people who work here.
Thank you so much for stopping by the blog today, I really appreciate it.
